A Kelly Ridge homeowner heading out of town may want the refrigerator, selected lights and communications equipment to keep working through a PG&E interruption. A solar-plus-battery system can support that plan when its circuits, reserve and operating setup match the loads left running.
The useful question is what happens when nobody is home to respond. This guide uses utility and Butte County resources checked September 12, 2026; it is preparedness advice, not notice of a current local outage.
Plan around the loads that stay on
Walk through the home before the trip and list equipment that must remain powered. Give the installer that list separately from your normal occupied-home routine. Ask whether any scheduled appliance or automatic control could add a larger load while you are away.
PG&E's battery guide explains that many systems support selected circuits, and that demand, available reserve and solar charging affect duration. An empty home can still use electricity; absence alone does not establish how long backup will last.
Have the installer recommend settings for your priorities and explain what the system does if charge runs low. Ask for an overnight estimate without solar recharge and a separate explanation of daytime recovery. Recharging depends on sunlight and compatible backup equipment, so do not assume the battery will refill every day.
Set up the right PG&E updates
PG&E's outage-alert page describes account alerts for the service address and asks customers to keep contact information current. Review notification preferences before leaving.
A trusted contact can also subscribe through the outage map when an outage affects the address; an online account is not required. Those map updates stop when power is restored to all addresses in that outage. PG&E says a new signup is needed for a future outage, even at the same address.
Treat this as an event-specific tool rather than a permanent monitoring arrangement. Agree in advance who will check for updates and who should receive a call if the interruption continues.
Write a short response plan
Leave your chosen contact the service address, installer or PPA support number, and a plain-language list of priorities. Establish what help you are authorizing and when to contact the service provider instead of attempting equipment changes.
Ask the battery provider what remote monitoring it actually supplies, which alerts require homeowner action, and how an authorized contact can request service. Clarify what happens if the app stops updating. A missing update alone does not establish whether the battery or the home's internet connection has failed.
Our Kelly Ridge communications backup guide explains why powering networking equipment cannot guarantee internet service. Keep important contact details available outside the app.
Keep local access decisions separate from battery status
Butte County identifies Station 64 as serving Kelly Ridge around Lake Oroville. Its evacuation information page directs residents to the address-based evacuation-zone map.
Include the property's zone in the response plan. Anyone considering a visit should follow current official evacuation and access directions. A battery showing charge does not establish that a property is safe to enter, and restoring utility power is not permission to enter a restricted area.
Include support in the PPA proposal
A qualifying no-upfront solar-plus-battery PPA can provide access to renewable generation and storage while preserving cash. The CPUC consumer guide explains that the provider owns the solar system and sells its generated electricity to the homeowner.
Confirm eligibility, all upfront charges, ongoing payments, rate, escalator, term and home-sale provisions. Specify battery ownership, backup circuits, monitoring, service responsibilities and replacement coverage. Include remaining PG&E charges; no upfront payment does not mean free electricity, unlimited backup or guaranteed savings.
