For a Lake Elsinore homeowner preparing for an SCE outage, recognizing the battery’s status light can make a support conversation clearer. For Powerwall 3, identify the exact unit first: a dark logo on an Expansion unit is not the same observation as an unlit indicator on the main Powerwall.
A suitable solar-plus-battery PPA can help eligible homeowners add backup equipment without purchasing it upfront. Ask the provider to include a model-specific handover and service plan so the household knows what to observe if power is interrupted.
Read the indicator for the correct model
Tesla’s U.S. Powerwall 3 owner manual describes these states:
- Steady white: normal operation.
- Blinking white: the unit is idle and may enter sleep when nothing is in progress.
- Unlit: the unit is off or asleep.
- Blinking red: an inverter fault.
The same manual says Powerwall 3 Expansion units have no LED indicator. Their front logo does not illuminate. Use the instructions for your actual model; this list does not describe every Powerwall generation, Gateway or other manufacturer’s battery.
Tesla also says these devices are not user-serviceable and warns against opening the Gateway’s internal deadfront cover. Leave repairs to Tesla or a Certified Installer. An observed fault is a reason to contact qualified support, not to remove covers or improvise a reset.
Prepare a short observation note
Our suggested support note records the unit model, time, light color and whether it is steady or blinking. Add any app message you can read and which expected backup appliances have stopped working. A photograph or short video taken from a safe position may help the service team understand what you observed.
For example, suppose the kitchen loses power but another supported room still has electricity. Report both facts rather than describing the whole system as dead. This hypothetical example does not diagnose a circuit or equipment problem; it shows how precise observations can help the installer investigate.
Before an outage, save the provider’s service number somewhere accessible without the battery app. Ask who handles after-hours calls and what information they need to identify your installation.
Check SCE separately
Lake Elsinore’s archived September 2025 maintenance notice identifies SCE as the utility for the listed local addresses. That old notice is not a current outage announcement.
Use SCE’s Outage Center for current address-specific utility status. A battery indicator does not establish the cause or restoration time of a utility interruption. Our Lake Elsinore outage-reporting guide covers that separate check.
Keep backup expectations and payments clear
A normal indicator is not a runtime estimate. PG&E’s general battery guidance explains that stored charge, supported loads and solar conditions affect backup duration. Ordinary grid-tied solar alone generally does not provide outage power. Solar recharging during an interruption requires compatible backup equipment and suitable sunlight.
Ask the designer which circuits are supported and what simultaneous-load and energy limits apply. A status light cannot promise that every appliance will operate throughout an outage.
The CPUC solar guide explains provider ownership of solar equipment and ongoing payments for its generated electricity under a PPA. Confirm qualification, any upfront charges, energy rate, escalator, contract term, battery ownership, maintenance and transfer provisions. Include remaining utility charges and any separate battery fees; no upfront purchase does not mean free electricity or guaranteed savings.
