If your Menifee Powerwall shows a calibration banner and falls below its chosen backup reserve, that can be normal operation. Before an SCE interruption, check actual stored charge as well as the reserve setting. They answer different questions about your home's readiness.
This guidance was checked October 12, 2026. It is an equipment-preparation explainer, not notice of a current Menifee outage.
Read the battery message and the utility notice separately
Menifee's preparedness page identifies Southern California Edison as the local electric utility and directs residents to SCE alerts and Riverside County emergency notifications. Confirm your service address on your utility account.
SCE distinguishes maintenance outages, PSPS and rotating outages. Planned equipment work differs from a conditional wildfire-safety shutoff or a grid emergency. A calibration message is information about your battery; use SCE's outage-status page for address-specific utility information.
What calibration changes
Tesla's calibration instructions explain that periodic calibration is normal. During it, Powerwall may discharge below the reserve and temporarily change charging behavior. Calibration stops during a grid outage; that does not mean an emptied portion of the battery instantly refills.
Tesla provides a delay option on supported systems. Select “Calibration in Progress,” choose “Delay Calibration,” set a restart time within 72 hours and save. Only one delay is allowed per cycle. Tesla lists Powerwall 3 firmware 26.2, or Powerwall 2 firmware 26.18.2 or later, plus app version 4.50 or later as requirements. Confirm compatibility before relying on that control.
If the option is unavailable or the message is unclear, ask your installer or service provider for model-specific guidance. Other battery brands have their own procedures.
A useful check before notified maintenance
Suppose SCE sends your household a maintenance notice and the app also shows calibration. This hypothetical situation is a reason to review both systems:
- Record the utility's expected start window and check for changes.
- Note the battery's current charge, operating status and any separate fault messages.
- Review the supported delay control with your provider if the timing conflicts.
- Recheck charge before the interruption; selecting a reserve percentage does not prove that energy is already stored.
- Agree which optional loads can wait, and keep phone power banks and other household supplies ready.
Tesla's outage guidance explains that combined appliance demand must stay within system power limits. Backup duration also depends on available energy and usage. Ordinary grid-tied solar alone generally stops during an outage; recharging storage requires compatible backup equipment and sufficient sunlight. Our Menifee restoration-estimate guide covers planning when the interruption lasts longer than expected.
Include operating support in a solar-plus-battery proposal
A suitable PPA can help an eligible homeowner obtain solar and useful battery backup without an upfront equipment purchase, where that offer is available. Ask who explains app alerts, handles firmware questions and provides service during the contract.
The CPUC consumer guide explains that a PPA provider owns the solar system and sells its generated electricity. Confirm the battery model and ownership, qualification, installation charges, ongoing payments, rate and escalator, term, maintenance and replacement coverage, and home-sale provisions. Utility charges can remain; neither savings nor unlimited backup is guaranteed.
