Rio Dell Battery Backup: Plan for Interrupted Gas Service

A battery can support electrical loads but cannot restore gas service. Plan Rio Dell heating priorities, safe restoration and solar-plus-battery PPA scope.

A Rio Dell solar battery may keep selected electrical circuits working during a power outage, but it cannot replace an interrupted gas supply. If your backup priorities include a gas furnace or gas water heater, plan for both the electrical requirements and the possibility that fuel service is unavailable.

This is preparation guidance, not a report of a current gas or electricity outage. Humboldt County's December 2023 earthquake recovery update documents the earlier recovery effort affecting Rio Dell. That history supports planning for disrupted services without implying another event is imminent.

List what each essential appliance needs

Before requesting a battery design, identify whether heating, hot water and cooking equipment use electricity, natural gas or another fuel. Confirm your actual service arrangement rather than assuming every Rio Dell property has the same appliances or fuel provider.

For participating electricity accounts, RCEA supplies generation while PG&E delivers electricity. RCEA enrollment is separate from the home's gas service and from any private solar PPA.

Ask the installer to distinguish three things for each priority appliance:

  • Its electrical circuit, starting demand and running demand.
  • Any fuel, water or other service needed for normal operation.
  • The conditions under which it must remain off pending professional inspection.

A supported furnace circuit establishes only part of the heating plan. Stored electricity cannot supply the furnace's gas fuel or establish that the appliance is safe after damage.

Keep gas restoration separate from battery operation

PG&E's gas-outage guidance says that once gas has been shut off at the meter, you should not turn it back on yourself. PG&E or another qualified professional should perform a safety inspection before service is restored and appliance pilots are relit.

A working light, a charged battery or restored neighborhood electricity does not replace that inspection. Ask the appropriate service professional about gas restoration independently of the electrical system's status.

If you smell natural gas or suspect a gas emergency, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location. PG&E warns against using potential ignition sources—including switches, phones and flashlights—until safely away. Do not stay to operate battery controls or troubleshoot appliances. For a non-emergency PG&E gas outage, its published customer-service number is 1-800-743-5000.

Make a second essential-load plan

Consider a hypothetical Rio Dell household whose battery design includes a gas furnace's electrical components, refrigerator and lights. If gas service becomes unavailable, the refrigerator and lighting plan may still be useful when the home and equipment are safe to use. The furnace's inclusion does not create a heating guarantee.

Discuss a fallback before an outage. If you want an electric cooking appliance or heater included, have its actual demand assessed. Do not assume a battery sized around a furnace blower can also support an electric heater alongside other loads. Our portable-heater battery guide explains why that change matters.

PG&E's battery guide ties backup duration to available energy and connected demand. Request supported circuits, power limits and reserve assumptions for each scenario. Solar recharge requires usable sunlight and compatible equipment. Follow evacuation and occupancy instructions regardless of remaining battery charge.

Put the scope into your PPA discussion

A qualifying no-upfront solar-plus-battery PPA can help eligible homeowners access equipment without an upfront purchase. The CPUC solar guide explains that the provider owns the solar system and receives ongoing payments for generated electricity.

Confirm availability for your property, rate and escalator, term, battery ownership and fees, maintenance, damage coverage and transfer provisions. Remaining utility and fuel charges continue; no-upfront terms do not mean free electricity or guaranteed savings.

Bring an appliance list showing both electrical and fuel needs to a West Coast Alternatives consultation. A clear proposal should describe the services it can support and the separate arrangements your household still needs.
