Already have rooftop solar and want battery backup? For a Southern California Edison household, adding storage can make existing generation more useful and support selected essentials during outages. The project starts with the equipment and utility agreement already at your home.
This guide addresses SCE-served properties using official sources checked September 9, 2026. Confirm the utility on your bill before applying these interconnection details.
Start with the existing inverter and ownership records
Gather the solar inverter model, system diagram, original permission to operate and any PPA or lease paperwork. Ask the installer to identify which existing components can remain and which controls or wiring the battery addition requires.
The Department of Energy's solar-plus-storage explanation distinguishes AC-coupled systems, which use separate solar and battery inverters, from DC-coupled arrangements that connect storage on the solar system's DC side. These are design approaches, not proof that a particular battery works with every existing array.
Request a model-specific compatibility review and an explanation of any inverter replacement. SCE's battery installation guidance directs customers toward qualified design professionals and licensed, bonded installers experienced with these systems.
Can you retain your existing SCE NEM arrangement?
SCE's current solar FAQ says storage added to a previously approved net-energy-metered generator can remain eligible under its existing NEM program if all tariff requirements are met. That is a conditional pathway worth reviewing with your installer.
Have the proposal distinguish a battery addition from any solar expansion or change in system output. SCE also sets requirements for modifications, expansion applications, metering and power controls. Request written confirmation of the appropriate application, the proposed configuration's tariff eligibility and any required permission to operate before activation.
The same FAQ says batteries under an SCE NEM-Paired Storage agreement cannot charge from the grid. Ask which charging and export settings your particular agreement permits. Equipment capability alone does not establish permission to use every operating mode.
Specify what will work when the grid is down
Ask for the backup switching equipment, supported circuits and outage operating behavior to be documented together. Include whether your existing panels will be able to replenish the new battery while the home is disconnected from SCE.
PG&E's general battery guidance explains that backup commonly serves selected circuits, with duration affected by stored charge, household demand and solar availability. Those equipment-planning principles are useful here; SCE's own agreement governs this project's utility requirements.
Request an overnight estimate for your chosen appliances, plus an explanation of which can start and operate together. Sunlight and compatible backup controls are necessary for solar recharging. Read our SCE outage-preparation guide when choosing those priorities.
Coordinate the battery with your solar PPA provider
The CPUC's Solar Consumer Protection Guide explains that a PPA provider owns the solar system and sells its generated electricity to the homeowner. If your existing panels are under a PPA, ask that provider to confirm the process for adding storage and how the work affects maintenance and warranties.
A qualifying no-upfront solar-plus-battery offer can help preserve cash, but an existing PPA does not automatically include a later battery. Ask whether the addition uses an amendment or separate agreement, who owns the battery and what installation charges apply.
Review ongoing solar and battery payments, rates, any escalators, term, service coverage and home-sale provisions alongside remaining SCE charges. No upfront payment does not mean free equipment, free electricity or guaranteed savings.
