SCE Power Restored: Why Your Battery May Recharge First

Understand battery reserve recovery after an SCE outage, including Powerwall behavior, charging-source questions and support under a solar PPA.

When SCE service returns after an outage, a home battery may begin rebuilding its reserve before returning to its usual daily routine. Understanding that recovery step helps you see how solar and storage prepare the home for another interruption.

This guide uses official sources checked September 13, 2026. Battery behavior depends on the installed equipment, settings and applicable utility arrangement.

Confirm grid status and battery status separately

SCE's outage information page directs customers to its outage map for event information and estimated restoration times. Use SCE's information for the utility event, and your battery's monitoring system for its operating state.

A lit kitchen is not, by itself, proof that the grid is back: a working backup system may already be supplying that circuit. Ask the installer to show you where the app identifies grid connection, battery charge and any equipment alerts. If an app display is stale or unclear, contact the provider rather than inferring the system's condition from one reading.

Why might the battery charge first?

Tesla's system-notification guide explains that Powerwall can discharge below its selected Backup Reserve during an outage. After grid reconnection, it prioritizes charging from solar or the grid to reach that reserve before resuming Self-Powered or Savings mode behavior.

That is a Powerwall example, not a universal instruction to enable grid charging. Have your provider confirm the recovery behavior and permitted charging sources for your SCE tariff, interconnection arrangement and equipment.

For a hypothetical illustration, imagine the app reports 15% charge after an outage and the selected reserve is 40%. Reaching the reserve means recovering 25 percentage points. It does not mean the battery is full, and those percentages alone do not tell you how long charging will take.

The useful question is whether the system is recovering toward its documented target as expected. Avoid lowering the reserve simply to make the app return to its familiar daily pattern without considering your backup priorities.

What determines recovery time?

PG&E's general battery guidance explains that grid charging can relate to reserve needs, settings and program rules, while solar charging depends on available sunlight. These equipment principles are relevant to discussing an SCE installation; they do not establish permission under a particular SCE agreement.

Ask the installer for a recovery estimate that accounts for the starting charge, available charging power, household demand and allowed energy sources. A nighttime restoration and a sunny midday restoration can create different charging opportunities. Do not assume solar will refill storage overnight.

If the battery stops charging unexpectedly or displays an error, contact the installer or manufacturer. Save the alert and time for that conversation. Follow the equipment-specific instructions rather than repeatedly changing modes or resetting hardware.

Review recovery as part of your PPA backup plan

A suitable solar-plus-battery PPA can combine renewable generation with provider-supported equipment while avoiding an upfront purchase for qualifying homeowners. The CPUC's consumer guide explains that the provider owns the solar system and the homeowner makes ongoing payments for its electricity.

Ask who supports the system after an outage, whether battery service and backup controls are included, and how any grid charging appears in the overall cost comparison. Confirm qualification, rates and escalators, term, ownership, maintenance, separate charges and home-sale provisions. No upfront purchase does not guarantee savings or unlimited backup.

Keep the circuit list, reserve choice and recovery instructions together. Our SCE backup-planning guide covers preparation before an interruption. Explore the homeowner journey to discuss a solar-and-battery proposal that includes both outage operation and the return to normal service.
