If SCE’s outage map will not load during a blackout, switch to another official contact method rather than treating a blank screen as an all-clear. Prepare that fallback before an interruption: a home battery can support selected equipment, but it cannot guarantee that a utility website or communications network will remain available.

Separate a loading problem from an outage result
A page that never finishes loading has not answered whether your address has power. A saved screenshot is only a record of what the page showed when it was captured.
Start with SCE’s official outage-status page. It offers address, meter-number and outage-number searches. If the page loads but a search does not find your interruption, follow its reporting instructions; our outage lookup and reporting guide covers that separate situation.
If the interface remains unusable, avoid repeatedly spending phone battery refreshing it. SCE lists 1-800-611-1911 on its status page for assistance locating an outage. Save the number in your phone and keep a written copy with your service address and meter information. Calling still depends on available telephone service and does not guarantee an immediate answer.
Make a fallback that another household member can use
Before an interruption, organize a short contact card:
- The utility name shown on your bill and its official outage contact.
- Your service address and any outage number supplied in a notice.
- A household contact who can help obtain updates if your connection fails.
- The installer or manufacturer’s battery-support number, kept separate from utility reporting.
For example, suppose a phone can make calls but the outage map will not finish loading. The useful next step is the saved utility number, not assuming the battery has malfunctioned or that the interruption has ended. Describe observed conditions and ask for address-specific information; do not supply an invented cause.
Keep timestamps with any information relayed by someone else. An older restoration estimate should not silently become a new promise. If you see a downed line, SCE’s safety guidance says to stay at least 100 feet away and call 911 immediately; do not wait for a map to load.
Keep the battery plan usable without a web page
General battery guidance explains that backup supports designated circuits and lasts according to stored energy and household use. Ask your installer how to read the system’s status when normal internet access is unavailable, and keep the approved operating instructions offline.
Confirm supported communications equipment, inverter output limits and the reserve setting alongside other essential loads. Runtime remains finite. Ordinary grid-tied solar alone generally does not provide outage power; solar recharge requires compatible backup equipment and suitable sunlight. A powered router cannot guarantee an upstream internet connection.
Include operating support in a PPA proposal
A qualifying no-upfront solar-plus-battery PPA can help eligible homeowners access backup equipment while preserving cash. Ask for a handover that includes offline instructions and clear service contacts.
The CPUC solar guide explains provider ownership and ongoing electricity payments. Confirm eligibility, rate, escalator, term, battery charges, maintenance and transfer terms, plus remaining utility costs. No upfront equipment purchase does not mean free electricity or guaranteed savings.
