SCE Solar PPAs: Planning for Panel Cleaning and Growing Shade

Compare panel cleaning, tree care and maintenance responsibilities in an SCE solar PPA, including effects on grid purchases and battery charging.

For SCE homeowners, a solar power purchase agreement can combine access to renewable electricity with provider-managed equipment. A qualifying no-upfront-cost offer can also preserve cash. To make that convenience work over time, ask one practical question before signing: who handles panel cleaning and trees that grow into the sunlight?

A clear upkeep plan helps protect the value of solar production and makes household budgeting easier. The answer belongs in the agreement, alongside the battery and payment terms.

Clarify what maintenance includes

The CPUC solar consumer guide describes provider monitoring, maintenance and repairs as benefits of leases and PPAs. It also recommends asking who is responsible for operating and maintaining the system.

Use that conversation to distinguish equipment service from care around the property. For example, Sunrun’s customer guarantee page describes system maintenance for lease and PPA customers while also recommending that homeowners manage nearby tree growth and dusty panels. That is provider guidance, not proof that every contract includes scheduled cleaning or landscaping.

Ask your proposed provider to identify:

  • Whether cleaning visits are included, scheduled only when needed, or separately priced.
  • Who evaluates new shading and arranges any necessary tree work.
  • Whether you must obtain approval before hiring a cleaning contractor.
  • Who pays for an inspection when production drops, and how the cause is determined.
  • How upkeep responsibilities affect any production guarantee.

Keep the written answers with your proposal. Our production-guarantee guide explains the separate questions about measurement periods and compensation.

Connect upkeep to your SCE bill

SCE’s Solar Billing Plan FAQ recommends periodically having panels professionally cleaned. It also explains that SCE measures grid consumption and surplus exports, rather than all rooftop generation. Check your statement to confirm whether you have the Solar Billing Plan or an older NEM arrangement.

Here is a simplified energy example, not a production forecast. Assume a home uses 10 kWh during a daytime period, has no battery discharge, and initially receives 8 kWh directly from solar. It needs 2 kWh from the grid. If solar supplies only 6 kWh during an otherwise identical period, grid purchases rise to 4 kWh.

That does not calculate the dollar change: your utility tariff, timing, generation provider and PPA payment method matter. Nor does it establish that dirt caused lower output. Ask the solar provider to review production and monitoring records before ordering a cleaning service. A smaller export total alone cannot diagnose a dirty array.

Arrange care suited to your equipment

Sunrun’s cleaning guidance, updated January 13, 2026, explains that rain often removes light dirt, while heavier buildup may need attention. It advises against climbing onto the roof and using pressure washers.

Ask for manufacturer-approved care instructions and a recommendation based on your actual roof and conditions. Avoid assuming every SCE home needs the same cleaning schedule or will recover the same amount of energy. Get a written price for any separately arranged work.

Include the battery and full payment picture

A battery can store available solar energy for later use, but it cannot replace sunlight lost to shade. As PG&E’s general storage guidance explains, backup duration depends on stored energy and connected demand. Solar recharge also needs suitable sunlight and compatible, operational backup equipment.

Confirm battery ownership, service coverage, supported circuits and any separate charges. Under a PPA, the provider owns the solar system and you make ongoing payments for its electricity. Review qualification, the rate and any escalator, contract length and home-sale terms. No upfront purchase does not mean free electricity or guaranteed savings.
