San Diego Community Power: Check the Battery Payment Threshold

Understand SDCP Solar Battery Savings monthly performance targets and review incentive assumptions before comparing a solar-plus-battery PPA.

San Diego Community Power's Solar Battery Savings performance incentive depends on meeting a monthly target. A battery can discharge some energy and still fall short of the payment requirement. Ask how that target is calculated before treating projected rewards as dependable income in a solar-plus-battery PPA comparison.

Official sources were checked October 13, 2026. This guide uses the current program page and its linked Fall 2025 manual; participants in the 2024 pilot should confirm their separate terms.

Confirm which account and program you have

SDCP's service overview lists San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, National City and unincorporated San Diego County. Check actual enrollment on your bill. SDCP supplies generation; SDG&E handles delivery, grid maintenance, billing and outage response.

The bill guide identifies Community Power generation separately from SDG&E delivery. A battery-program reward is another distinct item; it should not be confused with an ordinary solar export credit or a reduction in your PPA invoice.

The Solar Battery Savings page advertises a performance incentive of $0.10 per qualifying discharged kilowatt-hour. It also points to the manual for calculation and payment details. Weather, battery age and technical problems can affect discharge.

Check the monthly threshold

Section 5.2 of the program manual defines the target as enrolled capacity multiplied by that month's weekdays. Enrolled capacity is 50% of incentivized nameplate usable battery capacity. The standard payment threshold is 90% of the monthly target; SDCP may lower it for systemic underperformance. Results are not averaged across months.

For illustration, assume 10 kWh usable capacity and 20 weekdays. Enrollment is 5 kWh, the target is 100 kWh, and the standard threshold is 90 kWh. An 85 kWh qualifying result would fall short. These hypothetical inputs are not an equipment recommendation or payment forecast.

Ask for the data behind the estimate

Have the contractor show how the proposal accounts for your home's solar production, household use and proposed storage. SDCP's solar-and-storage introduction emphasizes sizing solar with enough excess production to charge a paired battery.

A practical review list is:

  • Which battery capacity is entered in the application?
  • Which discharge data does the program count?
  • What assumptions support the expected annual incentive?
  • Who investigates a missing or unexpectedly low result?
  • How does the household budget look if a month earns no reward?

Keep the program's statements and your provider's projections together. If figures differ, request an explanation rather than assuming the app's total battery output equals eligible program performance. Our overlapping-enrollment guide covers a separate eligibility check.

Before relying on any incentive, confirm the current funding reservation, approved contractor and equipment, and property eligibility. The program page requires an SDCP residential customer at a qualifying single-family service address, solar-only charging and review of other energy-program participation. Apply through approved channels before installation.

Keep backup value and ongoing payments clear

A suitable no-upfront PPA can help eligible homeowners obtain solar and battery capability while preserving cash, where the offer qualifies. The CPUC consumer guide explains provider ownership and ongoing payments for generated electricity. Confirm battery ownership, incentive recipients, rate, escalator, term, fees, maintenance, replacement and home-sale provisions, plus remaining utility charges.

Ask the provider to verify program compatibility and show benefits only where they actually reach your proposal. Incentives do not make electricity free or guarantee savings.

PG&E's general battery guidance explains that stored energy, supported loads and solar availability limit backup duration. Your SDG&E-connected home needs compatible outage equipment; recharge depends on sufficient sunlight. A payment target is not a runtime promise.

Bring your bill and proposal to the West Coast Alternatives homeowner journey. WCA is independent of SDCP; program approval belongs to its authorized channels.
