SDG&E Outages: What Happens When Your Battery Runs Low?

Understand low-charge battery behavior during SDG&E outages, including a Powerwall example, recovery questions and support to confirm in a solar PPA.

A solar battery can make an SDG&E outage more manageable by supporting selected household essentials. During a long interruption, knowing what happens as stored energy runs low is just as useful as knowing the starting capacity.

A qualifying no-upfront solar-plus-battery PPA can help eligible homeowners access that equipment and provider support. Include low-charge behavior in the design conversation before installation. These resources were checked September 12, 2026.

Reduce optional demand while backup is still running

PG&E's battery guide explains that larger loads, low starting reserve and limited solar recharging can shorten backup duration. Those equipment principles also matter when planning an SDG&E home system.

Use the agreed essential-load list to identify optional activities you can postpone. Ask the installer which appliances can operate together and which controls manage larger loads. Avoid turning off equipment someone depends on without an appropriate alternative plan.

Watch the change in charge and consumption rather than treating one percentage reading as a promise of remaining hours. Runtime depends on available usable energy and actual demand, and solar recharge requires suitable conditions and compatible backup equipment.

Learn what low-charge standby means for your model

As one manufacturer example, Tesla's outage guidance says Powerwall enters standby and stops supplying the home when remaining energy falls below 10%. With solar attached, it attempts recharging hourly between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. local time. Continued charging requires enough solar to serve the home and charge the battery.

That is a product-specific description, not a rule for every battery or a guarantee of recovery at sunrise. It also does not establish which equipment a WCA proposal includes.

Ask your provider to identify the applicable low-charge threshold, app indication, automatic recovery behavior and service procedure for the exact model offered. A standby state can be part of normal operation; it does not by itself establish an equipment defect.

Follow the documented recovery process

Record the app message, approximate charge, time and loads operating when backup stopped. Share those details with the installer or support team.

Tesla's guidance also distinguishes low energy from overload and cautions that a restart attempt needs sufficient sunshine to supply the home and recharge. Use the instructions for your own equipment and contact support if the cause is unclear. Repeated resets cannot create stored energy.

Ask the provider to explain what recovery should look like after solar becomes sufficient or utility power returns. Keep that procedure available offline. Our SDG&E battery equipment guide explains why storage capacity and power output are separate design questions.

Have a plan beyond the battery

SDG&E's PSPS preparation page recommends current notification details, an emergency plan and kit, and safe alternative power arrangements for critical equipment during extended shutoffs. It directs customers to consult a licensed electrician and SDG&E about alternative backup systems.

Decide in advance where household members can go if essential needs can no longer be met at home. Do not wait for the last battery percentage to arrange help. This is general preparation, not notice of a current SDG&E shutoff.

Include operating support in the PPA

The CPUC consumer guide explains that a PPA provider owns the solar system and sells its generated electricity to the homeowner. Confirm qualification, upfront charges, ongoing payments, rate, any escalator, term and home-sale provisions.

Specify battery ownership, backup controls, supported circuits, training, maintenance and replacement coverage. Include remaining utility charges. No upfront purchase does not mean free electricity, unlimited backup or guaranteed savings.
